Buy Model Train - Consider the Layout
When buying a model train set you need to decide on want you want to do with it. Do you want to build it up or just watch it go? Get some ideas by going to your local hobby store. Hobby stores will have the powered train sets, whereas a toy store may only have the low end models that use batteries or windups and cater to kids, not collectors. If the train set is for your child, then a more circular track without a lot scenes or structures will work best, for someone that wants to expand or have a complete scene that matches a historic era, then an electric model train is what you want with a more complicated track system.
The most common scales are the HO, S, O and TT, where as HO is considered the Standard Scale. When deciding on the scale, consider how much space you have or require for your train ste. Smaller scales such as the N or Z will work in smaller spaces, such as a den or apartment.
You can either buy a kit that starts you out or you can buy individual pieces, switches, power packs, locomotive cars and the engine with the basic components. When picking out individual pieces ensure you have enough curves to complete your track circuit.
You can't just plop your set onto the floor or carpet, you want it out of the way, the best thing to do is find an old table or counter that can be built to suit the size of your track. I have found that stores going out of business have display tables that work great.
Leave some room for expanding, you know your gonna want to add some structures, especially when certain holidays come around to make it more scenic.
Pick building and people figures that are from the same era or historical time that your building your scenario around and make sure they are the same scale, you don't want a 12" GIJoe over towering your 2 inch figures - they just don't clash.
